Individual Variety

Ocimum basilicum

Basil

Vitamin A: 175% DV | Iron: 40% DV | Eugenol + Linalool — natural stress modulators

Aromatic and medicinal — ideal for stress relief, cortisol regulation, and digestive harmony.

Key Compound

Eugenol + Linalool (essential oils) + Orientin + Vicenin (flavonoids)

Why Basil?

Stress & Cortisol SupportSupports stress regulationAnti-inflammatoryDigestive support

How to Consume

  • The stress-modulatory effects of linalool are best preserved fresh and raw — heat volatilises essential oils
  • 30 g daily provides a strong dose of Vitamin A, K, and iron in a low-calorie package
  • Blend into smoothies or juice for anti-anxiety benefits without adding significant calories
  • Pair with sunflower microgreens for a complete stress + muscle recovery combination (cortisol regulation + protein + zinc)
  • Iron in basil is non-heme; always pair with Vitamin C foods for optimal absorption

Key Bioactives

Linalool (essential oil terpene)

Acts on the central nervous system to reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and promote mental balance. Research in chronically stressed rats showed linalool inhalation (basil essential oil) improved lipid metabolism, reduced stress hormone levels, and decreased cortisol-linked weight gain (PMC9105046, 2022)

💡 Linalool is also found in lavender and is the primary compound responsible for basil's anti-anxiety effects

Eugenol (phenolic essential oil)

Inhibits COX-2 inflammatory enzymes (same target as ibuprofen but naturally). Strong antibacterial, antifungal activity. Relaxes blood vessel walls, supporting healthy blood pressure. Anti-spasmodic for digestive support.

💡 Also found in cloves; eugenol is basil's primary anti-inflammatory compound

Orientin + Vicenin (flavonoids)

Tested in vitro for antioxidant protection against radiation-induced lipid peroxidation in liver cells. Together they constitute the major antioxidant flavonoid fraction in basil.

Anthocyanins (purple varieties especially)

Up to 126 mg total phenolics per gram of plant material in purple basil cultivars — roughly half the concentration found in green tea (Precision Nutrition research review)

💡 Green basil microgreens still carry meaningful anthocyanin + phenolic levels

Rosmarinic acid

Potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant polyphenol; has demonstrated cortisol-regulating and immune-modulating activity in research studies

β-carotene + Lutein + Zeaxanthin

Carotenoid-rich profile protects cells from free radical damage; supports eye health and immune function
